A group of east Montgomery poker players got a surprise Friday night when police officers busted in.

They were playing inside a business at 64 Bell Road that was licensed as El Camino, a scooter sales company, police said.

However no scooters were being sold, and Thursday, Friday and Saturday night games of Texas Hold 'Em were being played, according to police. The poker games were illegal because the house was making a profit, police said.

The poker business was under the name Red Stag and was exclusive. It required patrons to fill out an application, have a membership card and ring a buzzer to gain entrance to the business near the intersection of Bell Road and Atlanta Highway, police said.

The Borgata Casino has announced details of the sixth annual Borgata Poker Open, a 16-day tournament series running from September 3-18.

The series consists of 40 events and will end with the $10,000 buy-in World Poker Tour Borgata Poker Open Championship, a five-day tournament with a guaranteed prize pool of $5 million and a minimum winner's share of $1,424,500.

Poughkeepsie family cheers on young man against world's best

When he was 18, Michael DeMichele began his professional poker career at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, Oneida County.

When he was legally able to play in the bigger poker rooms of Las Vegas, the former Poughkeepsie resident moved out west at 21.

DeMichele has always known he belongs in the world of poker. Early Monday morning, he showed why.

LAS VEGAS — Poker professional Scotty Nguyen won nearly US$2 million at the World Series of Poker on Monday, topping a field of 148 players and emerging from a marathon final table with his fifth gold bracelet.

Nguyen beat out 23-year-old Michael DeMichele in H.O.R.S.E., a rotating-game tournament that cost $50,000 to enter.

The various games and limited betting structure reward all around play and is said to truly reward the best players over the long haul. Along with the main event, many players consider H.O.R.S.E. the most important tournament in the World Series of Poker.

Joe Commisso won the biggest single cash prize awarded so far at the 2008 World Series of Poker in Event 46, $5,000 No Limit Hold’em Six Handed.

Commisso won $911,855 after out lasting a field of 805 players and the longest heads-up match so far this year at the WSOP.

Commiso is a day trader who turned to poker, and has only been playing the game for three years, which is not a long time in poker. He said winning the tournament and the WSOP bracelet was a big deal for him, but he wasn’t sure he’d be playing in any more tournaments.

After battling through a field 0f 2,447 players the final table for Event No. 36 - $1,500 No Limit Holdem - was set early this morning at the 2008 WSOP, and one of the nine who made it to that final table was Team Bodog poker player Aaron "Gotcha55″ Kanter.
