WSOP: Largest first prize won at 2008 World Series of Poker
Joe Commisso won the biggest single cash prize awarded so far at the 2008 World Series of Poker in Event 46, $5,000 No Limit Hold’em Six Handed.
Commisso won $911,855 after out lasting a field of 805 players and the longest heads-up match so far this year at the WSOP.
Commiso is a day trader who turned to poker, and has only been playing the game for three years, which is not a long time in poker. He said winning the tournament and the WSOP bracelet was a big deal for him, but he wasn’t sure he’d be playing in any more tournaments.
“I pretty much detest tournaments,” Commisso said. “I don’t know if I ever want to play one again...It’s like someone sucking soul out. I just want to sit in my boxer shorts and play online. I might retire on top. I got my bracelet, I might not play any tournaments ever again.”
When the play got down to heads up, it seemed like the tournament was never coing to end, but after 209 hands heads up, Commisso finally took it down.
“It was ridiculous,” Commisso said. “I just couldn’t put him away.
Commisso was almost out the door in second place when the two players got it all in on the flop. He only had a straight draw and his opponent was holding top pair. The turn made his straight, which crippled his opponent.
“I got it in bad, so I won,” Commisso said. “That’s all I had to do. I should have figured that out the first 10 times when I got in ahead.”
The match finally ended when Commisso got his money in with A-Q and saw it hold up against 9-7, and the rest was history.
