Poker Pro Annie Duke Tends Pelvic Injury: Misses WSOP Week 1

By ok-poker - Posted on 09 June 2008

Top poker pro Annie Duke is missing the first week of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas, and though she relays that she suffered a triple pelvic fracture while jogging, her blog reports that she chose to miss the first week of the World Series of Poker to be with her kids longer before the long separation imposed by attending the WSOP.

Annie DukeOn her website, annieduke.com, she blogs: "I am showing up to the WSOP a week late because, honestly, I can't bear to be away from my kids. I have been travelling [sic] quite a bit and Ben is taking them to Montana for June so if I don't grab the first week of June I won't see them till beginning of July and I can't take that. I am upset just thinking about it. So the WSOP will have to wait because I just really want to be with my kids right now above all else."

In her blog, Duke explains how she aggravated the pelvic fracture by not immediately seeking medical help and continuing to run for 2 more months: "About two months ago I was doing a 16 mile run and I developed a pretty sharp pain in my pelvic floor around mile 11. Of course, because I am an idiot, I kept running till mile 16. Well, that night I had a lot of trouble walking. In fact, I really couldn't walk. So I rested it for a week and then went out to run again and around mile 3 I had to stop and limp home. By that night I could not put any weight on my right leg. But did I go to the doctor? Oh, no! Of course not."

Only after receiving an MRI exam, did the true nature of the injury become known, as she wrote:

"He did an x-ray and basically said well I don't think we will see anything on this x-ray because stress fractures usually only show up on MRI's.=A0But he did the x-ray and there it was, clear as day, a pretty bad fracture. So now I am going in for an MRI just to see what is really going on."

Later in the blog she writes: "Holy crap! just got the results back from the MRI I had on Monday and I fractured my damn pelvis in three places, not just one!=A0 One is a true facture and the other two are stress fractures. I am one stupid chick running on a pelvis fractured in three places. Man oh man. So now it is just rest rest rest."

Duke is one of the top, if not the top, female poker players in the world. Several years ago, she won $2 million in a made-for-television poker tournament aired by ESPN, which has only recently been eclipsed by Norwegian teenager Annette Obrestad, who last year won the WSOPE Main Event and the top prize that was slightly over $2 million.
