Canadian Plumber Wins $1,000,000 At 888’s World Poker Crown

A plumber from Toronto has won 888’s prestigious poker title, the World Poker Crown, after beating a tough field of over 2,000 online and then dominating a live final table in Spain.

Fellow Canadian Michael Lawson finished second, with another finalist also hailing from the North American country.

The final hand played out dramatically after Lawson had worked away at Hinchley’s chip lead. Lawson held a pair of tens in the hole and Hinchley an offsuit KQ. The flop was K-J-6, all hearts, and Lawson went all in with his pair which included a ten-high flush draw. Hinchley called with top pair and hit another king on the river after a blank turn to take down the prize.

Hinchey said his granddaughter Victoria was his inspiration throughout, and he turned to her picture in a locket he carried for luck when the cards ran rough. He promised his winnings would provide for her college education.

He said he planned to hand in his notice at his plumbing job, commenting that playing poker in Spain is “a lot better than being in a sewage pit!”
